Traditions and Identity
The Ultramarines descend from the Thirteenth Legion and preserve the traditions of Roboute Guilliman. Discipline, organisation and careful preparation shape their approach to warfare. Their strength lies in coordinating their forces and maintaining the support needed for a long campaign.
Their heritage extends beyond the battlefield to the realm of Ultramar. Building stable worlds and maintaining effective institutions are part of their Primarch's legacy. The Chapter also champions the Codex Astartes, whose teachings guide the organisation and warfare of many Space Marine Chapters.
Roboute Guilliman
Roboute Guilliman is the Primarch of the Ultramarines. His talent for organisation helped turn his Legion into a vast and effective fighting force. He understood that armies depend on recruitment, supplies and the stability of the worlds supporting them.
After spending millennia in stasis, Guilliman returned to an Imperium facing immense threats. He launched the Indomitus Crusade, bringing renewed military strength to humanity's scattered defenders. His responsibilities now reach far beyond the Ultramarines themselves.
Ultramar and Macragge
The Ultramarines are closely connected to Ultramar, a realm of many worlds in the eastern reaches of the Imperium. Macragge stands at the heart of this heritage and is the Chapter's home world.
Under Guilliman, the worlds of Ultramar supported a large and carefully organised military force. Recruitment and supplies helped sustain the Legion's campaigns, while rebuilding conquered worlds strengthened the realm behind its armies.
This heritage gives the Ultramarines a responsibility that extends beyond individual victories. The worlds supporting their warriors are also communities whose stability helps make continued resistance possible.
Codex Astartes
The Codex Astartes provides teachings on the organisation and conduct of Space Marine warfare. The Ultramarines are among its foremost champions, treating its accumulated guidance as a foundation for their military traditions.
Its influence reaches beyond the Ultramarines to many other Chapters. Shared structures and methods help warriors understand their roles and coordinate their actions within a larger fighting force.
Following these teachings involves applying them to the battle at hand. Preparation gives commanders a range of responses, while judgement helps them choose which approach suits the enemy and the mission.
Battlefield Doctrine
The Ultramarines favour a flexible approach that combines the different strengths of a Space Marine army. Infantry, armoured vehicles and specialist formations support one another, allowing the force to respond to changing battlefield conditions.
Firepower can weaken an enemy position before an assault, while mobile units exploit openings or reinforce threatened areas. The effectiveness of these actions depends on timing and coordination between the warriors involved.
Their commanders seek to anticipate enemy actions and prepare suitable responses. This combination of discipline and adaptability allows the Ultramarines to fight across a wide variety of battlefields.
