Traditions and Identity
The Dark Angels trace their origins to the First Legion of the Space Marines. Their identity combines military discipline with the knightly traditions of Caliban, the home world of their Primarch. Rituals, guarded knowledge and ancient obligations remain central to the Chapter.
Their distinctive appearance reflects this heritage. Dark green armour, robes and sword imagery give their warriors a recognisable knightly character. Yet their traditions reach beyond appearance: secrecy influences their dealings with allies, and the burden of their past continues to shape their decisions.
Lion El'Jonson
Lion El'Jonson is the Primarch of the Dark Angels. The secretive knightly orders of Caliban helped shape his outlook, leaving a lasting influence on the warriors who followed him.
He disappeared during the catastrophe that destroyed Caliban, but has since returned to an Imperium transformed by millennia of war. His presence brings renewed strength to his sons without erasing their troubled history. Supreme Grand Master Azrael commands the Chapter from its mobile fortress-monastery, the Rock.
Caliban and the Fallen
Caliban was the home world whose knightly traditions shaped the Dark Angels. During the upheaval surrounding the Horus Heresy, rebellion divided the warriors stationed there from their returning Primarch. The confrontation ended in the destruction of the world and the disappearance of the Lion.
Survivors of the rebellious faction became known as the Fallen. Their existence remains a source of shame and a driving force behind the Chapter's secretive pursuits. The Dark Angels and their successors are collectively known as the Unforgiven, a name that expresses the burden of this unresolved past.
The hunt exists alongside their duty to defend the Imperium. A campaign against an external enemy may also provide an opportunity to uncover hidden knowledge or pursue a suspected Fallen. For the Chapter's leaders, military objectives and private obligations can become closely intertwined.
Deathwing and Ravenwing
The Deathwing and Ravenwing give the Dark Angels two distinctive specialist formations. Deathwing veterans are renowned for their bone-coloured armour and their ability to endure punishing combat. Their heavily protected warriors bring concentrated force to decisive engagements.
The Ravenwing approaches battle through speed and manoeuvre. Its motorcycle-mounted warriors and aircraft allow it to move rapidly across the battlefield, pursue targets and strike where the enemy is vulnerable. Its black armour and vehicles distinguish it from the green-armoured warriors usually associated with the Chapter.
These formations can work together. Fast-moving hunters place pressure on the enemy and help bring a target within reach, while heavily armoured veterans deliver the decisive attack. This combination of mobility and resilience gives the Dark Angels more than one way to overcome an opponent.
Warfare and Relics
The Dark Angels can draw on the broad military capabilities of the Space Marines as well as their own specialist formations. Their forces combine infantry, armoured support and aircraft, allowing commanders to choose an approach suited to the mission.
Their armouries also preserve weapons and vehicles with ancient origins. Plasma weaponry is a particularly recognisable part of their arsenal, from the weapons carried by individual warriors to the formidable battery mounted on the Land Speeder Vengeance.
Relics connect the Chapter's present campaigns with its long history. They are both tools of war and reminders of inherited duty. Alongside the speed of the Ravenwing and the strength of the Deathwing, these treasured weapons help give the Dark Angels their distinctive battlefield character.
