Traditions and Identity

The Blood Angels descend from the Ninth Legion and preserve the legacy of their Primarch, Sanguinius. Their identity combines martial skill with a deep appreciation of beauty. Painting, poetry and finely crafted armour belong to their traditions alongside the discipline of warfare.

This artistic heritage stands beside a darker inheritance. Beneath their noble appearance, the Blood Angels struggle with violent impulses that can threaten their self-control. Their character is shaped by the effort to uphold the ideals of Sanguinius while resisting the destructive forces within themselves.

Sanguinius

Sanguinius was the winged Primarch of the Blood Angels. Remembered as both a magnificent warrior and an inspiring leader, he remains the central figure in the Chapter's identity. His example gives his descendants an ideal of courage and nobility to pursue.

His death at the hands of Horus during the Siege of Terra left a lasting psychic wound in his sons. Through the Black Rage, afflicted warriors experience echoes of their Primarch's final struggle and lose their grip on the present. His sacrifice is therefore both a revered memory and a tragedy that continues to affect the Chapter.

Baal

Baal is the home world of the Blood Angels and a centre of their shared heritage. It lies within Imperium Nihilus, the region separated from Terra by the Great Rift.

During the Devastation of Baal, the Tyranids of Hive Fleet Leviathan brought the Chapter's home to the brink of destruction. Many successor Chapters answered the call to defend it, suffering catastrophic losses alongside the Blood Angels.

The arrival of the Indomitus Crusade helped secure the system and made rebuilding possible. The defence of Baal remains a defining example of the bonds between the descendants of Sanguinius.

Red Thirst and Black Rage

The Blood Angels suffer from two related but distinct afflictions, collectively called the Flaw. The Red Thirst is a craving for blood and violence that threatens to overwhelm their discipline, particularly in the fury of combat. It existed even before the death of Sanguinius.

The Black Rage is tied to the psychic trauma of their Primarch's death. A warrior overcome by it loses his awareness of the present and experiences the final struggle of Sanguinius as though it were his own.

Those consumed by the Black Rage are gathered into the Death Company. Under the guidance of Chaplains, they are led into battle, where their final service is offered in the name of their lost Primarch. These afflictions make the Chapter's pursuit of self-control a constant struggle.

Angelic Warfare

The Blood Angels favour rapid assaults and close combat. Jump packs allow their warriors to cross the battlefield quickly and descend upon enemy positions, bringing their fighting skill directly into the heart of the opposition.

The golden-armoured Sanguinary Guard embody the Chapter's martial splendour. Alongside these elite warriors, the Blood Angels field the infantry, vehicles and supporting weapons available to a Space Marine Chapter.

Their commanders must combine aggressive action with discipline, directing the ferocity of their warriors towards a clear objective.
